Geosmin: An Overview

Everybody wants their water to taste clean and pure. Unfortunately, despite our nations strict standards of filtration, sometimes certain things slip through. One of the more common compounds that does this includes geosmin, a byproduct of a bacteria called Streptomyces. We’ll go over its effects here.

Where it comes from:

When streptomyces dies, it releases geosmin. Usually, its death comes from cold temperatures. Because of this, you might notice that your water has a bad taste/smell during the winter.

What it does:

Geosmin can’t harm you, so don’t worry about that. It does, however, create a bad taste and smell from your water. Your nose can pick up traces of geosmin at 5 parts per trillion. Normal methods of filtration don’t get rid of it.

If you’ve noticed a foul taste and smell coming from your water, it might have geosmin. Don’t worry, Oliver’s Pure Water can fix that for you. To find out more about our services, don’t hesitate to give us a call today at (817) 205-6411. We look forward to working with you!
